Living on the North Shore and Commuting to Boston: Train, Blue Line, Ferry or Car?

The Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line, the Blue Line from Revere, the seasonal Salem ferry, and Route 1 and 128. How commuting shapes the home search across Lynn, Swampscott, Salem, Beverly and beyond.

If you work in Boston, your commute should shape your North Shore home search as much as the house does. The main options are the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line (stops including Chelsea, Lynn, Swampscott, Salem and Beverly, then branching toward Gloucester and Rockport or toward Ipswich and Newburyport), the MBTA Blue Line, which ends at Wonderland in Revere, the seasonal Salem ferry to Boston, and driving via Route 1A, Route 1, Route 128 and I-95.

Which towns are near the commuter rail?

On the main line: Lynn, Swampscott, Salem and Beverly. On the Rockport branch: Beverly Farms, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Gloucester and Rockport. On the Newburyport branch: North Beverly, Hamilton/Wenham, Ipswich, Rowley and Newburyport. Walking distance to a station often matters to buyers and renters, and it can show up in price.

What about the Blue Line?

The Blue Line runs from Wonderland in Revere into downtown Boston, connecting with the airport along the way. Many North Shore commuters drive or bus to Wonderland. Homes in Revere, East Boston and Winthrop offer a more direct subway connection.

Is the ferry practical?

The Salem ferry runs seasonally between Salem and Boston and is a scenic option in warmer months. Check current schedules before counting on it year-round.

  1. Do the commute before you buy. Try it at rush hour, both ways.
  2. Check parking at your station, and its cost.
  3. Think about hybrid schedules. Two days a week changes the math.
  4. Weigh house versus time. A bigger home further out may cost you hours every week.

Questions people actually ask.

Can I live on the North Shore without a car?

In parts of Salem, Lynn, Swampscott and Beverly near the train and downtowns, it's possible for some people. Most households still keep at least one car.
